When I was little, I used to take part in drama competitions and one year my sister and I did a duet as Peter Pan and Wendy. Ever since then, I’ve loved the story so I was excited to take J and A along to see an open air production of Peter Pan by Immersion Theatre in the Bedford Park.
Miss A loves all things fairies, particularly Tinkerbell, and J love pirates – so it was the perfect combination!
We have been to see a few theatre productions this year – In the Night Garden and Dinosaur World Live – but they only lasted 50 minutes so I was interested to see how they would fare through two hours of Peter Pan. Lots of people had taken chairs along but we just took a picnic blanket. I think this was better to be honest as were seated closer to the stage with a clearer view, and it gave hthe children more freedom to shuffle around.
It was clearly a low budget production and the cast all played different characters and were out the front selling programmes before the show started. This didn’t detract from the show at all though and actually added to its charm. I was very impressed by the quality of the performances the energy they gave and the ay the story was told. It had a feel of a pantomime, with lots of interaction, music and dancing, and was well pitched to a young family audience.
There was an interval half way through which gave everyone a chance to stretch their legs, enjoy their picnics or get some snacks from The Pavillion. They even had Lickalix lollies which was a nice treat for the kids. Both children and their friend we took along were engrossed in the whole performance and we were lucky it was lovely weather to enjoy it in.
After the show, the main characters came out to have photos with the children. There was a bit of a queue but it went quite quickly and there was no extra charge for this, which was great, and it was a lovely expierience for them.
Our verdict
I really enjoyed our trip to see Peter Pan. It was a lovely location, a vibrant and captivating performance and a great way to introduce children to a classic story. Tickets were only £14 for adults, £10 concessions and under 5s free. I think this is really great value for a 2 hour performance and I would definitely book to see Immersion Theatre again.
